Happy New Year: Trump Axes Almost 11,000 Jobs In Federal Government
When President Donald Trump was campaigning, one of his main promises was that he would ‘drain the swamp,’ decrease the size of the federal bureaucracy.
And he has definitely kept that promise. By a lot.
The administration downsized permanent staff at all cabinet-level departments by the end of Sept. 2017, except for at Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs (VA) and Interior, The Washington Post reported Saturday. Hundreds of federal positions have been removed as a result of the administration’s commitment to retool and shed some of the two million federal government employees.
The federal workforce grew sizably under both former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, ballooning from roughly 1.8 million employees in 2000 to 2.14 million at the height of Obama’s presidency.
Trump has also not filled all the political appointments he could have filled yet, filling only 240 of over 600 that were open from the prior administration.
According to the Daily Wire, almost 11,000 federal employees have been cut in the first six months of the Trump presidency.
Government Executive states: “A July jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday showed non-postal federal agencies employed 2,188,900 workers at the end of the month, down 2,200 from June and 10,700 from January, when Trump took office.”
For comparison’s sake, let’s look at Barack Obama and George W. Bush over the same period of time. According to Hot Air, Barack Obama added 60,000 in his first six months and George W. Bush added 36,000.
The departments where he hasn’t cut are the departments that have really needed help, like the VA, and that are consistent with the focus of his presidency, like Homeland Security.
From Biz Pac Review:
Keeping employment levels higher at Interior, the VA, and Homeland Security is in line with the Trump administration’s “America First” policies, like its push for border security, improving veterans affairs and infrastructure spending, that is already shaping up to be the key legislative agenda of 2018.
Trump has indicated now that tax reform is done, infrastructure will be the next focus coming out of the box in 2018. and that’s good news as that’s a desperately needed area.
Finally having a president concentrate on saving money and actually doing getting things that he’s supposed to do accomplished is a great thing.
Looks like it’s going to be a Happy New Year!
